Background
Risk assessment and communication has to a large extent been quantitative,
also in radiation protection. In most countries information strategies based
on this approach have largely failed, both in terms of reassuring the
general public about radiation risks and, in particular, establishing trust
in authorities after the accidents such as Three Mile Island and Chernobyl.
The generally held view that these information strategies have failed in so
many countries is indicativ of some common problems. In addition, however,
specific issues (e.g. whether a country generates nuclear energy) in
individual countries may also be of importance. The radiation protection
community in general has been opposed by many environmental groups and from
different political standpoints. This also constitute parts of the social
condition for information, communications and decisions.
Objectives
The objective of the seminar (the workshop) is to bring together actively
working scientists from different diciplines, working on risk research, in
particular radiation risk research. It is to be hoped that inter-discipline
contact will fertilize and vitalize the research activitites in the field,
by addressing the questions from different standpoints and with different
methodology. It is hoped in particular that discussions on methodology
should facilitate multi-institutional projects combining quantitative and
qualitative methods into a more comprehensive approach to the problems.
