Tommy Johnson Retires
Tommy Johnson has announced his retirement after 35 years of service
at the Naval Research Laboratory. Tommy began his career in health
physics in 1960 after completing an AEC Fellowship in radiological
physics at Vanderbilt and ORNL. While at NRL, Tommy worked on a wide
variety of projects, including extensive work in TLD technology
(starting in the days of LiF powder), dosimetry applications of TLDs
(with extensive publications in the neutron response of dosimetry
systems), and neutron spectra determinations (authored the YOGI code
for unfolding). He has also personally assessed various areas of risk
assessment (white water rafting, sports car racing, and probably the
most hazardous, "parenthood"). His knowledge and experience in
health physics, and his commonsense approach to many intriguing
challenges, has been a great asset to NRL and to many others in the
health physics community. Tommy will be sorely missed. We wish him
the best, along with his wife Linda and two sons, T.J. and Sawyer.
