Discussion:

On June 29, 1995, NMSS staff met with Chem-Nuclear representatives to discuss
a variety of issues related to low-level waste (LLW) management. The staff was
informed that the Barnwell LLW disposal facility would begin accepting LLW
from throughout the U.S. (except North Carolina) on July 1, 1995. The
surcharge for waste disposal is $235 per cubic foot. When disposal fees are
added in, the unit cost is about $300 per cubic foot, or about $2200 for a
typical 55-gallon (200-liter) drum, or $60,000 for a typical 200 cubic foot
liner. Chem-Nuclear is proceeding with development of disposal facilities
in North Carolina, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, despite the extension of
Barnwell operations.
