E. T. Walton Dies

The members of the accelerator health physics community
observed the passing of a key pioneer in the field Sunday,
June 25, 1995. The following was in the 6/28/95 San Jose
Mercury News:

  "Ernest T. S. Walton, 91, an Irish physicist who
  performed a crucial atom-smashing experiment in
  1932 that ushered in a new era of nuclear research;
  Sunday at Belfast City Hospital in Northern Ireland."

Walton, along with Cockroft, constructed the Cockroft-
Walton electrostatic accelerator on or about 1929 that is
still used today as an injector for higher energy
accelerators and throughout the electrical power industry
for high voltage cages in power transmission gear.
