P32 Extremity Badges
Jeanne:
At MSU we assign extremity (ring) badges to P32 users who HANDLE 1 mCi or
greater in a single container. Meaning if they receive shipments of 1mCi
or more in a single container, they must wear the extremity badge. The
rationale is that with that quantity, there is a potential for extremity
doses. In practice, if they pick up a 1 mCi container and aliquot 1 uCi,
they have still handled the container and must wear the ring. This is easy
to track and manage. We base it on the shipments received, which also may
be tied to the approved quantity.
Our person rem has been under 4 mR/yr/worker for whole body doses, and less
than 20 mR/yr/worker (badged workers only) for the past 5 years.
Our overall policy on badging is that if they handle nuclides that can be
detected by the badge, we assign the badge.
Hope this helps.
Kristin
