 The best solution I have seen are those 5 button combination door locks...it 
beats giving out um-teen keys and the combination can be changed periodicaly.
Costly business... so converting the lab doors is occuring on a voluntary basis.
Another solution is to construct secureable  main entrances to research areas, 
(however, its very easy to just follow someone through the door..people tend not
to question strangers that do so.)
I like the button lock idea best...
