     I have to agree that the actual risk of the situation is seldom what 
     you are really discussing when you are dealing with the public.  With 
     reference to the 'public perception', anybody involved in 
     communicating with the public should check out the writings and/or 
     videos of Dr. Peter Sandman of Rutgers University and the Rutgers 
     Environmental Communication Research Program, 908-932-8795.  I would 
     recommend that radiation personnel that interact with the public and 
     all public affairs personnel of large organizations (private or 
     government) look see the videos.

     I don't know the correct rebuttal to the anti's claims, but I 
     would like to point out that the public's perception is a 
     seperate problem, not always based on knowlege. The anti is 
     trying to create a perception of risk, regardless of the facts, 
     and that perception is every bit as powerful as any true risk.
     
     I will also be looking for radsafer's comments on your posting.
