DOE Rebates

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE FOR PART OF $4M?

December 31 is the deadline for claiming a portion of about $4M being held
in the Department of Energy. Anyone who disposed of radioactive waste at
facilities in Barnwell, SC; Richland, WA; or Beatty, NV, during calendar
years 1990, 1991, or 1992 is potentially eligible. Page 15196 of the
Federal Register notice published March 31, 1994, lists the required
information and the address for submitting requests. Call Paul Smith at
208-526-6083 (E-mail: pps@inel.gov) for additional information.

Background A law passed by Congress in 1985 included a monetary incentive
for states and compact regions to develop new commercial low-level
radioactive waste disposal facilities by 1993. Users of disposal sites paid
for this incentive (about $22M) through "non-penalty" surcharges on their
radioactive waste disposed during calendar years 1990, 1991, or 1992. No
new facilities were built. However, most states and compact regions
provided for 18 months of extended access to the Barnwell, SC, and received
about half of the available funds. The remainder (about $11M) is refundable
to those organizations that paid the surcharges. To date, about 250
businesses have claimed almost $7M. The remaining $4M must be claimed by
the end of December or it will be sent to the states that collected the
funds - South Carolina, Washington, and Nevada.

Take care for now!
