Re: Cats at San Onofre; Other experiences

When I was at a nuclear plant we once had a small bird get in through the
equipment hatch during a refuel. It apparently decided that the lit pool of
water was the sky...dove in and proceeded to try to fly.

Several frantic minutes later...the bird was recovered. I seem to remember
that it read on the order of a 100,000 cpm with a standard pancake GM.
During the discussion of what to do with the bird, someone identified it as
being a member of a protected species. Which really started a discussion
going. (Turns out it was a common sparrow.) The bird died quite quickly. I
was somewhat amazed by the amount of time that it lived, after trying to fly
underwater.
