Re: occupational exposure and thyroid cancer
While external X-irradiation is a well-accepted cause of thyroid
cancer, virtually all of the data are on irradiated children. Ref.
Ron, E, Modan B, Preston D, et al Radiation Res.vol 120, 516-531, 1989.
A general review which includes no occupational cases is Holm L-E,
"Radiation Induced thyroid neoplasia" Soz. Praeventive Med, vol 36,
266-275, 1991. However Wingren, Hatscheck and Axelson, in Am. J.
Epidemiol. vol 138, 482-491, 1993 "Determinants of papillary cancer of
the the Thyroid" report a case-referent study from Sweden, and find
"Female subjects..reported a work history as dentists/dental assistants,
telephone operators, teachers, and day nursety personnel, and an
occupational contact with chemicals and video display terminals more
often than did controls. The 11 male cases more often reported working
as mechancs and metal workers, and having occupational contact with
solvents." I hope this helps. John Goldsmith, gjohn@BGUMAIL.BGU.AC.IL
