More news on NE Utilities and the NRC

     The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
said it may close two more reactors operated by Northeast
Utilities for safety concerns, the Wall Street Journal reported
     Monday.
The agency gave the utility 30 days to verify safety
practices at the Millstone 3 reactor in Waterford, Conn. and at
Connecticut Yankee at Haddam Neck, Conn.
Northeast already has two reactors at Waterford, Millstone 1
and 2, idled for safety reasons, the paper said.
The three Millstone reactors generate about 40 percent of
Northeast's electricity and the company is spsending about $15
million a month to replace the lost power from idled plants, the
     paper said.
Northeast Utilities has been pressured by the agency over
allegations that it dismissed employees who raised concerns, the
     paper said.
Northeast spokesman Anthony Castagno told the paper that the
copany had expected the new Nuclear Regulatory Commission
requirements and that it is confident that it will meet the
agency's safety standards. None of the reviews indicate a need
for significant capital spending, he told the paper.
