Re[4]: HP Job Shortage

The big problem is that these decisions are made by people who really
don't know what they are doing. All they ever see are a few charts
and graphs. All their underlings are "yes" men because they do not
wish to experience the rath of god by displeasing their superior.
Often times the big guys make decisions on bad info just because the
     "yes" men would never disagree.

It seems that the easy way to save money is to eliminate people
instead of making substantive process improvements. Every industry
has done this over the last five years. Unfortunately, this seems to
be a fad that hurts the real people that keep this country going.

Philosophically speaking, this is another sign that our society is
continuing in a downward trend to h... I guess the high wage earners
that are being eliminated can get a job at Walmart for $6.00/hr. Mr.
Clinton says that unemployment is okay, but every person on this
bulletin board probably knows someone who is a victim of
"right-sizing". Mr. Clinton needs to understand that while employment
numbers may stay the same, real wage earning and tax base is being
lost...but then again, this is an election year.

It is often hard to stand up and do the right thing, but if you don't
do it how can you expect anyone else to try? I sure wish my thoughts
meant more than they do in reality.

FPL's nuclear division formally announced today that they will
eliminate 180 staff positions and transfer up to 30 to each of its
nuclear sites. This is part of a decentralization of its nuclear
operations. The utility (all operations) eliminated 1,600 positions in
1995 and has already announced that an additional 400 will be
eliminated in 1996 (beyond the nuclear division layoffs).

The interesting issues raised in this current downsizing is that the
previous President of the Nuclear Division who retired on February 29,
1996 stated to the CEO of FPL Group, that the current division
staffing was at the correct levels to continue running the nuclear
facilities. The outside candidates for the position stated the same
facts, keep the division at its current levels. The new President was
previously the Site Vice President at the Turkey Point Nuclear Plant
(one of FPL's nuclear sites). A statement from the Palm Beach Post
this morning has the following quote in it, "Layoffs at Juno Beach had
been expected, said two nuclear division employees who spoke on
condition of anonymity, because (new president) did not rely on the
Juno Beach support staff as head of Turkey Point."

And the valid requirements remain ... and there won't be anyone to
     work them.
