Re: Ra where you least suspect it

There is a good point here:  "The radioluminescent paint may
have deteriorated to the point where the dial does not glow
in the dark, but the radium is still there!"  This created some
interesting experiences during the Navy's radium removal campaign
a number of years ago.

The instrument mentioned had, in some cases, mCi quantities of 
Ra-226 painted on the dial.  The purpose of radium paint 
applications in Navy ships (particularly of WW II vintage) was to 
provide information during "darkened ship" conditions.  The 
systems performed well in action (but have left a legacy!).
