Subject: Packaging

In the past, the 17H drum has been used as a Type A container.
Currently, the UN (1A2) designation is being used in place of the 17H.
Has the UN series actually been tested and certified, or is everyone
"assuming" the two are equivalent? Thanks.

The nice thing about performance criteria packaging is that once its
passed, as long as the performance criteria aren't changed, it stays
passed. A Type A package must meet the specified criteria and the
general requirements for packagings 173.410 and possibly 412 if
liquids are to be transported in them. So once your old spec 17H
metal barrel has been qualified it stays that way until the
qualifiers change.
