DOT packaging specifications are found in 49 CFR 178. Metal drums for
radioactive material are specifications 6L and 6M, found in 49 CFR 178.352,
354. International Air Transport Association (IATA) package specifications
are found in chapter 6 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, 37th edition
for 1996 (updated annually). These include the 1A1 and 1A2 steel drums. The
17H specification is no longer used, although there are still such drums
around. I am not familiar with the 6J specification you quoted. Keep in mind
that, for a "type A" quantity of radioactive material, the specifications that
really count are those of 49 CFR 173.415, "Authorized Type A packages." These
are: (1) DOT Specification 7A as stated in 49 CFR 178.350. (2) An NRC
approved Type A package, (3) an approved Type B package, and (4) a foreign
made type A package in accordance with "AEA Safety Series No. 6" - under
certain conditions. These are performance specifications. The manufacturing
specifications, such as 6L and 6M are used primarily as a reference so that
you can be assured that the packaging that you're using is equivalent to the
packaging that was tested. You must also show that the test is valid for your
contents; eg., a test performed with flour may not be valid if you're shipping
metal pieces with sharp edges, and a test using solid contents is unlikely to
be valid for liquids.

Does anyone know of a reference that explains
the various drum/package designators and their
meanings? i.e. 6J, 17H, etc
Thanks
