     I would say that the H stands for Dose Equivalent ... since Hd is deep 
     dose equivalent, He is eye dose equivalent and Hs is shallwo dose 
     equivalent..

I've asked this question to a number of people, and never even gotten a 
guess, so here goes:
     
What is the "H" in dose equations short for?
