pantopaque

Specifically, a small number of cc's of pantopaque [contrast agent] is
injected
[generally] via lumbar puncture into the subarachnoid space of the spinal
cord. This is usually done under fluoroscopic control. The table is tilted
so that the contrast agent moves up and down in the subarachnoid space.
Ruptured discs and other abnormalities show as a deformity pressing on the
pantopaque- filled space.

The iodine in the contrast agent makes it attenuate radiation and show up on
fluoro images and "white" on the xray films taken during this myelogram
procedure.

CT scans have replaced myelograms in many cases.
