moderation note
I am really, really not trying to moderate RADSAFE too much as it's my
belief that a group of adult professionals should be capable of
conducting themselves like, well... a group of adult professionals.
HOWEVER, please keep in mind that every message you send to the RADSAFE
mailing list goes to over 1550 people. Would you typically send what
should be private a message to that many people? Well, that's exactly
what you are doing when you post to RADSAFE what would normally be
considered private e-mail.
There are far, far too many messages being posted that are either
intended for an individual or are simply a waste of bandwidth. Recent
examples include:
- Personal attacks and answers to personal attacks
(if you want to have a flame war, take it out of RADSAFE)
- Replies to job ads and requests for further information
(ask for additional information via private e-mail please)
- "Me too," "I agree," or "thanks" messages
(I realize that we all want to be polite and supportive of our
colleagues here, but such messages do not contribute anything
substantive to the discussion)
Please remember to post your e-mail address in your messages so that
your colleagues will be able to send you private e-mail.
I have on many occasions considered reconfiguring the listserver
software so that replies are automatically sent to the individual
rather than the list. I have resisted in the past because I think some
of the "flavor" of the list would be lost. Perhaps it's time to
revisit this idea. (Note: if you have an opinion, send it via private
e-mail <grin>, but keep in mind that even if just 1% of the
subscribership sends me e-mail on a particular subject... well, do the
math and please be patient if I can't get back to you right away.)
My apologies for this digression and resultant waste of bandwidth. I
have had to intervene far too much lately.
