Needing a Visiting Professor at National Yang Ming University

Contaminated building materials in Taipei, Taiwan

Tom Gesell recently attended a conference in Taiwan where he learned of
another case of radioactively contaminated metal finding its way into the
marketplace. In Taipei, approximately 1000 apartments, offices and
classrooms in 85 buildings have been constructed with reinforcing steel
("rebar") contaminated with Co-60. The original source of the Co-60 has not
been determined, but a radiography source is suspected. Doses to occupants
ranging from 0.03 to 1.3 Sv over a ten year period have been given in a
preliminary estimate, and more detailed work is in progress. This situation
has given rise to significant social and economic problems for the affected
individuals.

Dr. Wuchou (Peter) Chang of the National Yang Ming University is leading
studies related to dose assessment. He is seeking an academically qualified
individual to spend a year as Visiting Professor at Yang Ming, collaborating
on these studies. A demonstrated interest in environmental radiation
studies is important. I understand that the university would provide travel
expenses, a locally competitive salary, and possibly living accommodations.
Dr. Chang can be contacted by email at wpc94@dns.ym.edu.tw or at the
