Don: I encountered a similar problem when trying to calibrate a gamma
dector for use around an accelerator. I *made* some Na-24 to use as an energy
calibration source. And, you can calibrate on sum-peaks if you can see them
with the detector, e.g., in the case of NaI. Of course it's easy to make some
Na-24 if you've got a neutron source. Just put a vial of NaC03 or other Na-
compound next to the target of an accelerator where the neutron flux is high.
There might be emitters of higher E gammas. I've not given that much thought
because the above worked for me.
Do us a favor: if you find a good answer, put it out on radsafe.
