Re: ALARA Cost/Benefit



     Bates Estabrooks asked about ALARA cost/benefit and as usual,  
     Radsafers responded with some good references.  Typically, the 
     regulatory numbers have a basis in "societal" costs due to 
     hypothetically induced risk of illness.  However, many power 
     plants have added the additional cost of training workers and 
     providing radiation protection services and possibly the cost of 
     hiring replacement workers if someone approaches administrative 
     control levels. A good review of the process can be found in 
     Nuclear Plant Journal, Valuation of Dose Avoided at US Nuclear 
     Power Plants, by Dr. John Baum (Mar-Apr 1991).
