Glass safety glasses

Hello
  My wife works for a optician here in Los Alamos and alot of people
getting safety glasses say that they have to have glass lenses to protect
them from the radiation. As far as I can tell most of these people are
working with Pu-238.

Are the glass lenses justified and if so why?
