RADSAFE - S-35 Volatility Info

Re: S-35 Volatility Issue

To add to Dr. Joe Ring's response, we have
noticed that the volatility is primarily associated
with S-35 labeled amino acids used for
investigating protein synthesis and genetic
regulation of this process. The specific activity of
the material is usually around 1,494 Ci/mmol. This
high specific activity accelerates the radiolytic
decomposition of the S-35 compound. The
percent volatilized is reported as 0.004% -0.1%.
Although the quantity is unlikely to reach maximum
permissible airborne concentrations, precautions
should be taken to avoid any possible internal
exposure (e.g., opening/venting in a fume hood or
charcoal trap). Also, ordering the material in a
tricine stabilizer appears to reduce the volatility by
80%. Additional info on this subject is available
from the suppliers (i.e., Amersham and
Dupont/NE) in the form of technical data sheets or
an MSDS.
