Re: Nuclear Reactor Fuel Rods are Radioactive Sealed Source
Noel Montgomery's comment on the Registry of Radioactive Sealed
Sources and Devices (SSD) is well taken. And his point about the
Part 50 requirements, whatever they may be in this case, may well
render the entire point moot.
However, that raises the question as to whether the NRC would list
fuel elements in the SSD even if they perform/ed a safety evaluation?
Manufacturing and distribution are rather tightly controlled and (I
believe; don't recall anyone trying it) the Agreement States can't
authorize any of their licensees to receive them. I believe Texas
is the only regulatory agency that requires an SSD evaluation
before a licensee can be authorized to receive a sealed source.
