Re: Frequency of SRD Calibration

The practices I am familiar with are:

1. The TLD or Film is currently accepted as primary doisimetry (NVLAP
and DOELAP accredited)

2. If the primary dosimeter is lost, a secondary device, such as a
SRD, EPD or any other accepted dose reconstruction methodology can be
used, and, the dose on the NRC Form 5 is still listed as the "dose of
record"

3. The SRD, EPD should be calibrated semi-annually.

4. Primary dose of record need not be NVLAP or DOELAP accredited,
i.e., EPD, UNLESS the regulatory agencies require that they be so
accredited (which they have been very reluctant to follow through
with, as of yet)

The reality is, the SRD or PIC as some would like to call it, isn't
very stable, accurate or precise, and it doesn't really matter
whether it is validated on a 3 month, 6 month or any other frequency.
However, if the primary dosimeter is lost, then the licensee must use
some method to arrive at "some" estimate of the dose, and hen record
it. Just get the individual to acknowledge it, and it then becomes
the dose of record.
