Dear Susan,

The Ranger Uranium mine in the Northern Teritory, Australia, has been
experimenting with a manmade wetland filter for a number of years. Water is
passed through the filter then used for irrigation purposes. The 
Environmental
Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist, ERISS, (our reseach "arm")
has
also been involved in the project. From memory, "filter" efficiencies above
90%
are readily achievable.

The Director of ERISS is Arthur Johnston (arthurj@oss.erin.gov.au). If you
contact him, he will be able to put you on to the right person at ERISS. You
may
also want to contact the Environment Manager at Ranger mine. His name is
Andrew
Jackson (andrew.w.jackson@north.com.au).

A colleague of mine is interested in biological decontamination techniques;
like using plants or other organisms to extract uranium from water, the
ground, etc.  Is anyone aware of the current status of this technique or any 

good references?  Thanks.
