Re: Dental Profession and Radiation Training

In Tennessee, the credentials from their education of dentists, dental
hygienists, and certified dental assistants are generally accepted for
operation of dental x-ray equipment. All others must attend a course
(minimum 40 hours plus practical experience) or pass an exam. Both
course and exam must be approved by the Board of Dentistry. The
system for credentialing untrained operators (non-ARRT) of medical
x-ray equipment is essentially similar. By a glitch in the law, even
ARRTs working in private physicians offices must be credentialed by
     the state.

My experience with dental professionals is limited to California and
Washington State. Anyone taking X-Rays in California is required to pass a
formal training program and pass a State Test. In Washington State, they are
trained by their employer unless they have formal training from a technical
program. They typically learn on the job.
