SUPERVISING PUBLIC HEALTH PHYSICIST  -  COUNTY OF ORANGE, CALIFORNIA

Salary: $3812/mo to start.........$5122 maximum

General Duties:  The Supervising Public Health Physicist, under general
direction , develops and administers a comprehensive County-wide
radiological health program, and supervises the work of Health Physicists
and Environmental Health and Hazardous Waste Specialists who perform
difficult, technical field and laboratory work.  Specific duties include
managing the Off-site Dose Assessment Center in the event of a nuclear power 

plant accident drill or real event at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating
Station (SONGS); negotiating State Radiological Health Contract with state
personnel to establish fiscal year budget and reimbursement levels;
maintaining and disseminating current information regarding federal, state
and local laws, regulations, policies and procedures which govern program
operations; creating and modifying emergency response plans and procedures
to meet federal, state and county regulations; developing effective working
relationships with community groups or representatives and other health
service units; preparing and implementing inservice and public education
training programs.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience or knowledge of x-ray procedures is
highly desirable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  graduation from college with BS in engineering,
physical science or a live science with the equivalent of a minor in
physical science, and four years of full-time responsible professional
experience directly related to the knowledge and abilities listed below,
including some supervisory experience.

THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF:  theories, principles and applications of nuclear
physics and radiology as related to radiation protection;  laws and
regulations governing Radiological Health;  contract preparation,
negotiation, administration and monitoring including the development of
procedures to assure compliance and conformity with the terms of the
contract;  principles, techniques and practices of radiation protection and
health physics;  biological effects of radiation on people and their
environment.

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF:  principles and techniques of effective supervision,
program management and budgeting;  communication skills and techniques
required for gathering, evaluation and transmitting information.

ABILITY TO:  plan and direct a County-wide program of environmental
monitoring and surveillance of radioactive materials;  train, direct and
evaluate a subordinate group and maintain consistency with program
objectives and standards;  communicate and interact in situations requiring
instructions, persuasion and counseling;  participate in conferences, group
discussions and individual interviews;  coordinate visual observation and
oral or written communication into concise, descriptive, written or oral
formats that reflect continuity of thought and effectively convey concepts
or conclusions;  read and understand complex material;  develop and maintain 

effective working relationships with all levels of staff, other programs,
agencies and the general public;  use a County-approved means of
transportation to travel to work sites.
