Re: Nuclear Powered aircraft

Two aircraft engines were built and tested at the National Reactor Testing
Station (now known as the Idaho Natinal Engineering and Environmental
Laboratory) in the late '50s by GE. A HUGE (!!!) hangar was built to house
the airplane (that was never built) needed to fly with these engines. Both
were orignially mounted on double-wide railroad cars, to give you a
visualization of their size, which was mentioned in the earlier posting.
They still have localized spots with measurable radiation levels. If
anyone would like to see the engines, they are on display, behind a small
fenced enclosure, at the EBR-1 National Monument here at the INEEL.
