Newby question

I am new to the list so please bear with me (or relay that I am being
inappropriately idiotic). I hear routinely that the radiation dose from
a variety of exams is less than "what you would get by sitting on the
beach for an hour". Exposure to the sun can obviously cause erytherma.
Has anyone done the calculation of absorbed dose rate from exposure to
the sun? I guess that the entire thing would have to be based on an
assumption of how deeply penetrating the radiation is.

If someone could give me guidance on this one, I am interested.
