Michigan State University, Office of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Safety (ORCBS) is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join its team of health and safety professionals as a Senior Health Physicist. This highly visible and responsible position will assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of a large scale non-fuel-cycle broad-license radiation safety program. The successful candidate will assist with the control and minimization of risk involved in radiological hazards, assuring that the safety and compliance requirements are met for the use, storage, transport and disposal of radioactive materials for the Michigan State University licenses and permits. The ORCBS services approximately 250 radiation use faculty and 1500 users in 52 academic departments, including the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory.

Duties for which this person will be responsible include, but are not limited to: development and maintenance of a comprehensive environmental monitoring program; site and function specific training programs; spectral measurements of radiation; characterization, measurement, evaluation and documentation of radiation environments, including those present at a large heavy ion accelerator; design of shielding and interlocks for an evolving accelerator program; and executing research and developing programs pertaining to evolving needs.

The position involves handling radiation and other hazardous materials, wearing a respirator, significant physical effort and moving throughout the University while transporting equipment, moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds, responding to emergencies and working on a VDT up to 75% of the time.

Minimum requirements for the qualified candidate are a Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Physics, Radiation Protection, or a closely related field; three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive experience in broad license radiation safety at the institutional management level; demonstrated ability to know and apply safety regulations; experience in health risk appraisal; public speaking skills; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired qualifications include accelerator or power reactor experience; chemical safety/industrial hygiene experience; computer literacy; and hazardous materials handling/regulations. The minimum salary is $34,627/yr.
