Jim, I'm sorry but we didn't determine why they were failing in this
fashion. They were,
however, very old and had been in civil defense bomb shelters for years....
Also these
were being exposed to extremely high dose almost instantaneously, on the
order of 80
to 180 mrem, or 80 to 180 R depending on the dosimeter scale.
Typical pocket dosimeters are generally quite durable and accurate, I
seriously doubt
that you will run into similar problems with them.
