     Quite right, the only true EPD is made by Siemens Environmental 
     Systems Limited 011-44-1202 782780. Right again, the EPD is widely 
     available in Europe and worldwide.  In the US, there are currently two 
     Nuclear Utility Companies utilizing the EPD and associated access 
     control system, along with some DOE and numerous medical facilities. 
     
     Weight is not an issue.  The EPD is made to wear on your belt or 
     attached to your clothing.  You don't notice the weight (0.37 lbs) 
     unless of course you are very frail or you have nothing else to 
     complain about the EPD!
     
     As far as taking the EPD apart, there are two screws and a retaining 
     clip.  Maintenance consists of changing batteries and replacing worn 
     rubber button covers.  Where is the difficulty?  Mechanical aptitude 
     must not be your cup of tea.
     
     If you are really interested and you want facts based on operating 
     experience (3 years and approximately 2000 EPDs), call me.

In the UK I think the only true EPD is made by Siemens Plessey Controls 
Ltd. Tel 44 202 782000. It has our HSE approval to be used as a dosimetry 
service, and has been in use for many years. It is widely available in 
Europe, and I would imagine worldwide.
     
.......However we had one on loan for evaluation and hated it! Man it's 
heavy! We also took it apart to see how it worked (well you just got to) 
and we couldn't put it back together again, oops!
