Dr. Zakharov dies from acute dose

Criticality safety professionals from around the world expressed
sorrow and wish to extend condolances to Dr. Zakharov's family.

Many professionals also indicated they wish to learn more about this
accident to improve our abilities to predict mechanisms by which such
accidents occur and to prevent such accidents in the future.

Some U.S. criticality safety professionals knew Dr. Zakharov because
he participated in several international activities, including the
Fifth International Conference on Nuclear Criticality Safety
(ICNC'95); groups dealing with nonproliferation, international
security, and materials protection, controls, and accounting issues
for critical assemblies; and the International Criticality Safety
Benchmark Evaluation Project. Benchmark Project leader Blair Briggs
said, "A. N. Zakharov was a contributing author to over 20 evaluations
submitted to the [Project]. His [future] contributions will be
missed."
