Re: Statement for Limited Quantity Shipments

You are talking about two different types of RAM shipments. One is
for "Small quantities of hazardous materials", and is limited to small
volumes (<30ml, <30g... see 173.4(a)). This is a generic small
quantity exemption for many type of hazardous materials including RAM.
The disadvantage is that it only applies to small volumes/masses. The
advantage is that you don't have to comply with the hazmat training
requirements of 173.1. Also, I don't believe there is a UN number for
small quantities as defined in 173.4 (but you'd better check
     yourself).

The other is for "Limited quantity RAM", and covers "Limited
Quantities", "Excepted Packages of Instruments and Articles",
"Excepted Packages of Articles Manufactured from Natural U, Depleted U
or Natural Th", and "Empty Packages". Hazmat training is required for
these types of shipments, but they cover a MUCH wider range of RAM
     packages, forms, and quantities.

Note, all references are from 49CFR. Hope this helps,

These are my own observations, not official interpretations of the regs.

Note paragraph 173.4(a)(9) states that the exterior of the (small
quantities) package must have the following statement marked on it:

"This package conforms to conditions and limitations specified in 49 CFR
173.4"

I can't recall seeing this statement on "any" limited quantity packages
that we have received from manufacturers. The UN2910 statements are
usually "inside" the packages.

Am I reading this wrong or have they been forgetting something?
