JOB OPENING: Radiation Safety Technician



The University of California, Santa Cruz, has an opening for a temporary
Radiation Safety Technician.

Primary Duties: Under close supervision, performs professional and
technical duties in the Radiation Safety Program:  Assists in operational
management of radioactive waste program at the campus hazardous waste
facility; collects and processes radioactive waste for disposal.  Monitors
radioactive materials received on campus, delivers radioactive packages to
campus laboratories.  Conducts leak-testing of sealed radioactive sources,
maintains radioisotope inventory records.  Maintains instrument calibration
program.  Assists in routine radiation safety tasks in areas such as
laboratory inspections, effluent monitoring.  May assist in other assigned
general tasks of Environmental Health and Safety

Required skills and knowledge: Knowledge of California Radiation Control
Regulations and US Department of Transportation regulations relative to the
shipping and receipt of radioactive materials, radiation dosimetry, leak
testing requirements, etc.  Demonstrated experience handling operational
aspects of radioactive and hazardous waste programs.  Basic knowledge of
Chemistry and chemical principles.  Basic radioisotope handling skills.
Radioisotope measurement techniques of liquid scintillation counting, use
of various radiation detection equipment including Geiger counters, sodium
iodide detectors, ion chambers, etc.  Ability to organize and manage time
effectively.  Demonstrated basic computer skills.  Knowledge of the
operation of various radiation producing devices such as X-ray
diffractometers, diagnostic X-ray equipment.  Ability to handle large
volumes of work in an organized and effective manner.  Ability to follow
written procedures.  Ability to perform bioassays.  Ability to interact
effectively with people. Valid drivers license required.

Salary: $30,780.00. (hiring range), medical and sick-leave benefits.
