                        DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

                       ------------------------------

                                In general



Under the supervision of the Head of the Dosimetry and Medical Radiation

Physics Section, to assist in formulating and executing the IAEA/WHO

Network of Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratories (SSDLs) programme and

the Section's activities in the field of medical physics, with special

emphasis on radiotherapy physics.



                               In particular



     - To assess the level of work performance of the laboratory members of

     the IAEA/WHO SSDL Network, to maintain a database on the main

     activities of the SSDLs and to prepare decisions on membership of the

     SSDL Network;



     - To act as technical officer for technical co-operation projects in

     developing Member States and research projects, mainly in the field of

     dosimetry and medical radiation physics, providing advice on the

     physical aspects of radiation therapy and the selection of measuring

     instruments and equipment;



     - To collect and edit papers for publication in the SSDL newsletters;

     to prepare scientific reports, manuals and other documents related to

     the field of dosimetry and medical radiation physics;



     - To participate in the implementation and development of laboratory

     procedures for measurements with ionization chambers and the

     dissemination of standards for radiation measurements at the Agency's

     Dosimetry Laboratory, organizing comparisons with members of the SSDL

     Network;



     - To take part in the preparation and organization of training courses

     in the field of dosimetry and medical radiation physics, including

     training of fellows at the Agency's Dosimetry Laboratory;



     - To prepare and organize scientific meetings including symposia and

     seminars, to act as scientific secretary, and to assist in editing the

     proceedings of such meetings;



     - To take part in the operation and further development of the SSDL

     Network in Member States following the performance levels of the

     International Measurement System. To develop and transfer dosimetry

     standards for radiation measurements to the SSDLs. To extend the

     activities of SSDLs to quality assurance programmes in medical

     radiation physics.

                              QUALIFICATIONS

                            -------------------



Essential: Ph.D., or equivalent degree, in medical radiation physics; at

least ten years' practical experience in radiotherapy physics as a hospital

physicist; experience in radiation beam measurements using ionization

chambers and thermoluminescence dosimetry (TLD); good knowledge of

radiation dosimetry metrology (primary and secondary dosimetry standards,

calibration procedures, intercomparison methods, expression of measurement

uncertainties); experience and ability in science management demonstrated

in publications in peer-reviewed journals; demonstrable experience in

administration and management of activities and personnel; proven

experience in computerized spreadsheets (statistical evaluation), word

processing and databases.

Desirable: Experience in teaching and familiarity with the specific

problems of developing countries; some experience in international-level

work. Experience in editing scientific manuscripts.

Languages: Fluency in English, French, Russian or Spanish essential.

Remuneration is quoted in annual amounts in Austrian shillings and is

deemed to be exempt from National Income Tax. It is composed of Net Base

Salary plus local Post Adjustment and amounts, after deduction of the

contribution to the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, to a total of:



   Rate:



   Single        AS 755,621.- (including a net base salary of US$

                 48,019.-)



   Dependency    AS 818,137.- (including a net base salary of US$

                 51,597.-)

     Applicants should be aware that International Atomic Energy

     Agency Staff Members are international civil servants. As such,

     they may not seek or accept instructions in regard to the
