     I heard somewhere that "ignorance of the law is no excuse." That also 
     applies to codes of ethics.  One purpose of the code of ethics is to 
     have a basis for correcting deviant members' behavior, and for that 
     purpose, it doesn't matter whether the deviant member has read the 
     code or not.
     
     Personally, I think Sandy's estimate of those who have read their 
     society/work group code of ethics is somewhat low.  I have read the 
     code of ethics (or similar document) of every organization I ever 
     belonged to. The first one started, "On my honor, I will do my best 
     ..."
     
     As always, just my personal opinion.

Code of Ethics are fine. I suppose an interesting statistic would be, 
how many individuals who are members of a particular society or work 
group, have ever read the appropriate Code of Ethics? My hypothesis 
would be less than 5%..

Words are fine, but when not read, they are meaningless letters on an 
otherwise serene piece of paper.
