Because of  the low beta energy of Fe-55 I only know about LSC methods for
determination - which does not necessarily mean, that there are no others
possible. Windowless gas counters with the sample to be measured in a
prepared form under the counter may be used for instance. To check for
contamination I can only imagine smear samples and LSC measurements. But be
very careful: Chemiluminescence may occur and mislead you to suspect high
contamination. We have such experience, but we can distinguish with our
Quantulus counters chemiluminescence from "real" counts.
