Re: Tranasprotation of RAM to be used in a remote location
Things that I would be concerned about include:
(1) The driver needs hazmat employee training, per 49CFR172, Subpart H.
(2) You should be sure that your license covers the planned activities at the
planned location.
(3) There should be trained personnel at the receiving location to properly
receive and open the package, per 10CFR20.1906. I assume that you already
have the procedures required by this section.
(4) You should be sure that the package meets the dose rate and contamination
limits of 49CFR173, and that the vehicle, with the package in it, meets the
dose rate limits of this section. I would be especially concerned about the
dose rate limit in the driver's seat (2 mrem/h), although there is an
exemption to this that you might meet. This same limit would apply to any
passengers he has with him. Also, the package loading must meet the minimum
separation distance from the driver specified in 49CFR177.842, and must be
blocked and braced so that it cannot change position during transport.
(5) The driver must have emergency response information and an emergency
response phone number, per 49CFR172, subpart G. This phone number must be
covered by a knowledgable person during the time the material is in transit.
If the material is a "Reportable Quantity," per 49CFR172, and is involved in
an accident which releases this material, then the National Response Center
must be notified.
(6) I highly recommend surveying the vehicle after the radioactive material is
removed. This would be a requirement if the package exceeds the contamination
limits upon receipt.
(As a practical matter, it is usually a better policy to have a trained group
which handles radioactive material transport.)
The opinions expressed are strictly mine.
Here's to a risk free world, and other fantasies.

If a researcher wants to use RAM (incorporated in seeds) to use in a
remote location (university property) and if I prepare the package and
shipping document, Do I need to be concerned about anythingelse? The
researcher will drive a university vehicle. The package will require
yellow label II. I feel that I read something about driver training
before
in radsafe. Thank you in advance. Have a good weekend. M. Jo
P.S. How about if the site is in another state (please exclude licensing
concerns)?
