                  ASSISTANT RADIATION SAFETY OFFICER

 Posting date: 10/6/97

 Grade: 5
 Department: Office of Radiation Safety
 Salary: Commensurate with experience

 Description: Report to the Director of Radiation Safety. Handle the
day-to-day operation of the Office of Radiation Safety's programs
throughout the Medical Center. Oversee the intake and inspection of
radioactive materials. Oversee the waste management program, which
entails establishing and monitoring appropriate controls, pick-up and
disposal. Oversee, conduct and document radiation instrument measuring
devices, patient surveys and personal badge monitoring system. Oversee
the Medical Center's cyclotron for radiochemical and radiopharmaceutical
production, including professional and technical personnel training and
record keeping reviews of clinical and research records for the PET
Center and the cyclotron. Ensure  compliance with New York State
Department of Environmental Conservation Permit for the discharge and
disposal of radioactive material to the environment, in addition to
basic health physics support. Review applications for the use of
radioactive material. Develop and present radiation safety programs.
Participate in education and safety programs for employees throughout
the Medical Center. Train RSO subordinate staff. Develop an Office of
Radiation Safety Quality Assurance and Procedure manual. Serve as an
advisor to responsible investigators, architects, physicians and
administrative officers of affiliated institutions regarding appropriate
design of facilities where radioactive material and/or x-ray producing
equipment will be used. Oversee the development of RSO management
applicable rules, regulations, and guidelines of regulatory agencies.
Investigate and analyze incidents and badge exposures including
documentation of appropriate corrective action recommendations.
Qualifications: M.S. degree or Ph.D., or the equivalent in training
and/r education, with emphasis on radiation safety. Five years of
related experience in radiation safety in a healthcare setting.
Certification by the ABHP, ABR, ABMP is highly desired. The ability to
set priorities, meet deadlines, take initiative and work independently.
Excellent organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills required..
Excellent verbal, written and personal communications skills is
required. Computer support and project management skills, including the
ability to manage and develop RSO management software and the RSO
website is desired.

               HEALTH PHYSICIST

 Description: Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance
of a large-scale, broad-license radiation safety program. Assist with
the control and minimization of risk involved in radiological hazards,
assuring that the safety and compliance requirements are met for the
use, storage, shipping receiving, transport and disposal of radioactive
materials for the CPMC and NYSPI licenses and permits. Handle a wide
range of duties associated with an academic/medical and analytical x-ray
facilities, and radioisotope labs. Conduct ALARA reviews and
investigations and calibrating instruments. Manage waste. Monitor
personnel, handle source leak tests and provide computer support for the
RSO. Qualifications: M.S. degree in health physics, medical physics, or
physics. Two years of progressive experience in applied health physics
or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Excellent verbal, written and personal communication skills is required.
Computer support and project management skills with the ability to
manage an develop RSO management software and the RSO website is highly
desired.
