Re: Iodine-131 emergency response

Hi RadSafers and MedPhysics,

This is our I-131 emergency response cocktail recipe which we also use for leak testing of I-125 seeds. This recipe comes from old 3M guidance but you can also find a similar recipe on page 62 from Amersham in their "Review 18 - Radioiodination Techniques" by A. E. Bolton:

500 ml deionized water
0.4 g Sodium Hydroxide
15.8 g Hydroscopic sodium thiosulfate (anhydrous)
1 g Pluronic F68 surfactant (Detergent)
510 g Povidone Iodine

Stir vigorously until everything disolves before use.

We modified the cocktail to include the Povidone Iodine. We did this because if the solution becomes acidified the povidone will turn dark brown and let us know that is not going to reduce and bind the radioiodine! The solution normally should be clear.

Enjoy! %^)
