If anyone is interested in doing some background reading on the 
subject, there is an interesting article `Radioactive and Radiation 
Treated Gemstones', by Charles E. Ashbaugh III, in Radioactivity & 
Radiochemistry Vol 2, No 1, pages 42-57.  The article includes 
production of irradiated gemstones by natural radiation, gamma 
facilities, linac's and nuclear reactors. There is a list of 
gemstones with their starting colour, finishing colour, activation 
products and typical activity concentrations.
