Interestingly, I recall a case reported some years ago in which a
smoke-detector factory worker actually DID ingest one of the Am-241 sources
(not the whole detector.)  I do not recall the circumstances of exactly how
this happened.  What I do recall is that the source passed relatively
harmlessly through the person's GI tract, and was eliminated from the body
with a few days.

Yours for interesting internal dosimetry problems . . .
