I guess I don't have any "actual measurements" but based on discussions with
HPs who worked at Fernald, and also based on our experience with uranium
melts, the daughters do indeed "float" to the surface, and you can easily get
multiple rad/hr beta fields - mostly from the Pa-234m beta.  

So this effect is real, and you need to watch out for it if folks are going to
be fooling around with freshly melted U.
