Health and Safety Technician Job Description
Summary
The health and safety technician works with the Genentech community and
the health and safety staff within the Environmental, Health, and Safety
Department to develop and implement Genentech's health and safety
programs. The technician works primarily in the field, and serves as an
important liaison between employees, management, and contractors. The
position is initially a one-year, contract assignment for an entry-level
candidate, and provides an excellent opportunity for growth in the health
and safety field.
Responsibilities
Provide air testing and authorization for confined space entries
Assist with other permitting and authorization systems as needed (e.g.,
hot work, contractor safety)
Maintain and calibrate industrial hygiene and safety equipment
Conduct exposure assessments (e.g., noise, chemicals) under the
direction of a certified industrial hygienist
Stock and maintain safety stations throughout the campus
Conduct inspections and track corrective actions for key health and
safety programs (e.g., emergency equipment, laboratory health and
safety, walking and working surfaces)
Perform limited emergency response as needed (e.g., spill response)
Order and deliver ergonomics equipment
Develop simple written procedures as needed
Assist the data base administrator with data entry for selected
information systems, such as material safety data sheets, injury and
illness tracking, and hazard inventories
Interface with environmental staff and technicians to implement
intradepartment initiatives
Support additional special projects as requested
Skills/Knowledge
Understanding of basic concepts of health and safety management
Mechanical and technical aptitude
Ability to prioritize demands and perform multiple tasks
Interpersonal and communications skills
Proficiency in basic computer skills, including spread sheets and data
bases
Experience
One to three years' prior field work in a health and safety discipline
is strongly desired. Prior experience with safety issues and programs
is highly favorable.
Education
An associate's degree in safety or 2 - 4 years' experience in a safety
field are minimum requirements for a suitable candidate. Additional
education in a scientific or technical degree program is desirable.
