: Leak Testing Sealed Sources -Reply
Leak testing requirements are usually specified in the license because 10 CFR Part 20
does not address this area. Sealed sources need not be leak tested if: they contain
only hydrogen 3; or only a radioactive gas; the half life is less than 30 days; they
contain less than 100 microcuries of beta/ and or gamma emitting material or not more
than 10 microcuries alpha emitting materials: or they are not designed to emit alpha
particles, are in storage and are not being used. Leak tests are required when they
are removed from storage for use or transfer. Hope this helps.
These are my thoughts and the Agency has not reviewed this information.
