The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language does not list a word
"trifoil" but does define "trefoil" (in addition to the botanical definition)
as "any ornament, symbol or architectural form having the appearance of a
trifoliate leaf." 10 CFR 20 does not use the term "trefoil," but rather uses
"radiation symbol." New York City and New York State (and probably other
Agreement States as well) use the same term "radiation symbol," although in my
years as a regulator with the City have often heard the term "trefoil"
(usually without any modifiers) used to refer to the radition symbol.
