** THE ROBERT S. LANDAUER, SR. MEMORIAL LECTURESHIP-- The Western
Regional Landauer Memorial Lecture Award was established in 1973 by
R.S. Landauer, Jr. & Co. (now Landauer, Inc.) in honor of Robert S.
Landauer, Sr. One Memorial Lectureship is now awarded each year,
alternating between a Western Regional award and an Eastern
Regional
Award. The purpose of these awards is to encourage interaction
between medical physicists and health physicists, and to
memorialize
Robert S. Landauer, Sr. by bringing a speaker of merit who would
not
normally be available to speak at a local meeting, but who would
come
because of the extra scope of the lectureship. This award carries a
$400 honorarium, and all expenses of the speaker are paid for by
Landauer, Inc.
Robert S. Landauer, Sr., was best known as a teacher of
radiological
physics and, in this capacity, did much to assist and encourage
physicians now practicing radiology, dermatology, and internal
medicine. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of Chicago,
and
received his Ph.D. in 1921. Dr. Landauer taught radiological
physics
at the Northwestern University Medical School from 1950 until his
death in 1966. In 1965, he was elevated to Professor Emeritus.
Dr.
Landauer served as Chief Physicist for Standard X-Ray Company from
1922-1932 and operated his own consulting service from 1932-1954.
In
1954, he associated with Cook County Hospital where he did
considerable work in Nuclear Medicine, including the study of
emphysema using Kr-85. Dr. Landauer was a Diplomate, American
Board
of Radiology, and a Fellow, American College of Radiology.
The distinguished list of recipients of the Western Regional
Landauer
Memorial Lecture Award now includes:
1974 Karl Z. Morgan, 1985 Clarence Lushbaugh, 1975 Harold E. Johns,
1986 John Harley, 1976 John R. Cameron, 1987 Michael Phelps, 1977
F.
Herb Attix, 1988 Merrill Eisenbud, 1978 Robley D. Evans, 1989

Herbert M. Parker, 1994 Robert L. Brent, 1984 Edward Webster, 1995
Howard I. Amols, 1996 Melissa Z.Y. Woo, and 1997 Kunio Doi.
Dr. Kunio Doi received his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Waseda
University in Tokyo. After graduation, he joined the faculty of
the
Department of Radiology at The University of Chicago, where he is
currently the Ralph W. Gerard Professor in the Biological Sciences.
In
1977 he became the Director of the Kurt Rossmann Laboratories for
Radiologic Image Research at The University of Chicago, and in 1994
was appointed the Associate Chairman for Research in the Department
of
Radiology. For the past 12 years he has been the Director of
Graduate
Programs in Medical Physics for both the Departments of Radiology
and
Radiation and Cellular Oncology. Dr. Doi is currently serving the
third of three four-year terms as an elected commission member of
ICRU, and last year he became a member of the Integration Panel for
Breast Cancer Research Program sponsored by the US Army. He has
received several awards, most recently the Umetani Award of the
Japanese Society of Radiological Technology. Dr. Doi has been
active
in research and has authored or co-authored more than 360
publications.
