Re: FWD>I-131/dialysis question

Debbie Rothley asked how to handle contamination problems associated with
administering I-131 to a dialysis patient.

The answer depends upon the type of dialysis the patient is undergoing. In
the case of peritoneal dialysis, the problems may
be localized to the patient and the dialysis saline solution bags used.
Rather than allowing the patient to handle changeout as an
out-patient he will most likely be required to be hospitalized and have
this done by competent hospital staff.

On the other hand, if hemodialysis is being used, you are most likely
facing the dedication of one dialysis machine to the patient in question
until such time as sufficient half-lives have passed. Repeated flushing
after each use [every other day] will most likely create a considerable
rad-waste issue.
